College for Older Adults

Today was the 3rd day of classes in a series of 6 days of classes for this session at the Higher Education Center in Abingdon. All I ever wanted was to be a nurse, but that never worked out -- so I am now content with taking classes just because they are fun and interesting. I'm taking "Birding by Sight and Sound," "Colors," and "That Wasn't in My History Book."

After classes, I saw "Promised Land," a movie in the Arts Array series. It had an unusual ending that I didn't expect.

Spring Nature Festival

This past weekend (April 19-21) I went to Warriors Path State Park for their 34th Spring Nature Festival <http://www.tn.gov/environment/parks/WarriorsPath/>. There were professionals from several parks -- simply too many things to do and couldn't get to everything. They were so knowledgeable and interesting. I learned a lot, but unfortunately I've retained very little.

Camped in a tent, and it was really cold at night -- so cold that you could see your breath in the mornings. The days were sunny and warmed up to the 60s. While on a hike on Friday night, an animal (probably a raccoon) visited and entered the tent. It couldn't remove the pizza box through the small hole it had opened up in the zippers, but it did eat the remaining slice of pizza. It took outside and ate an entire bag of trail mix (M&Ms, fruit, and nuts) and about 1/4 of a 2 cup container of chipped beef gravy I had left out to thaw for breakfast.

One of the park rangers on the Friday night after-dark hike made barred owl calls -- and one called back. Then we saw two of the barred owls, still returning the ranger's calls. Then the two owls flew to one branch and made sounds together that the rangers said they had never heard. They agreed that the sounds were not aggressive and may have been mating-type "conversations."

On Sunday morning the rescue squad came and took away someone from two sites down. Hope they are okay.

Grayson Highlands

Today I went with the Slater Center to Grayson Highlands State Park <http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state_parks/gra.shtml>. We parked at Massie Meadows and walked up and beyond where the trail intersected with the Appalachian Trail. We saw 6-8 of the wild ponies, which were so tame that they come up to us to be petted.

I received an email from June that had a PowerPoint attachment with the most beautiful music. I wish I knew what it was (it sounded like Yanni). I'll attach it when I figure out how that's done.
